At the age of 15 he and his brother Terry formed the successful country folk-rock group called Mason Prophet.  They were swept up in the Jesus movement but John followed a slightly different path while studying the life of Saint Francis Assisi. He created many projects for Sparrow records and joined the Franciscan order while starting a house of prayer called "The Little Portion".
